The Ottoman House :
Al Kamandjâti's centre in Palestine
As Al Kamandjâti does not want to be the
simple witness to the destruction of Palestinian cultural environment
by years of occupation, Al Kamandjâti decided to finance part
of the renovation of a house dating back to the Ottoman times in the
Old City of Ramallah to contribute to the protection of an architectural
property and enhance public awareness towards the Palestinian history
through its heritage.
The Planning and Urban Development of Historic
Buildings Unit of Riwaq Centre, which aims at developing policies to
protect cultural and architectural properties in historic cities and
at developing a model for the rehabilitation of historic centres in
various Palestinian villages and cities is one of our partners in this
project.
One of Al Kamandjâti centres is the result of an agreement with
Riwaq, of the great support of Swedish International Development Cooperation
Agency (SIDA), and in cooperation with Tamer Institute and the Khalaf
and Ghanem families, by which this old Palestinian house is leased
to Al Kamandjâti on a 10-year renewable tenancy agreement in
exchange of 10% of the costs of renovation.
The renovation of this ottoman home in Ramallah
Downtown offers Al Kamandjâti a place for classrooms and houses
the administrative team, since August 2005.
